Toxicity to pets

Pets — especially dogs — can have underactive thyroids too. Interestingly, the dose of thyroid hormone needed to treat hypothyroidism in dogs is much higher than the dose needed for humans. One time, or acute, ingestions have a fairly wide margin of safety in dogs and cats.  If pets accidentally get into a few tablets of thyroid hormones at home, it rarely results in problems. However, large acute overdoses in cats and dogs can cause muscle tremors, nervousness, panting, a rapid heart rate and aggression.
